Having Very Few Interests
Those living with Asperger’s have quite specific interests, and they generally aren’t high in number. They might be solely interested in computers, astronomy, history, math, or another single area, and they will not take any apparent interest in learning about other things. It’s possible the single interest can be replaced with another as time goes on, but for some people, the interest can persist for life. In adulthood, some people even end up embarking on careers that revolve around these specialized interests.
Difficulty with Making and Keeping Friends
As you can likely surmise, the lack of social fluency in kids with Asperger’s can make it difficult for them to make and keep friends. Social interactions take great tolls on them, to the point that friendships and relationships can be immensely affected. Fixating on one interest or hobby also hinders them from identifying and connecting with other people over mutual interests, which only further alienates them socially.
