Phonophobia: Increased Sensitivity to Sounds in Bacterial Meningitis
In individuals with bacterial meningitis, another symptom that may arise alongside photophobia is phonophobia, which refers to an increased sensitivity to sounds. Similar to photophobia, phonophobia can trigger severe headaches, especially after being exposed to loud or high-pitched noises. Moreover, these two symptoms can further lead to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion.
Lack of Appetite: A Common Symptom of Bacterial Meningitis
When individuals fall ill, it is not uncommon for their appetite to diminish. However, in cases of bacterial meningitis, this lack of appetite can be quite severe. The inflammation within the brain caused by this condition can actively impair certain areas, such as the hypothalamus, which play a vital role in regulating satiety and feeding.
