Signs of Perimenopause

Mood Swings: Early Signs of Perimenopause

Perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause, can bring about various symptoms, including intense mood swings, anger, and a persistent feeling of being “on edge.” Interestingly, these emotional changes may occur even before any noticeable alterations in the menstrual cycle. According to research, approximately 40% of women experience mood swings attributed to hormonal fluctuations during this phase. These swings can range from episodes of rage to periods of intense moodiness, anxiety, and frequent crying spells.

Furthermore, studies have found that the risk of depression doubles when women enter perimenopause. Those who have previously experienced extreme premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or postpartum depression are particularly vulnerable. It is crucial for women experiencing these emotional shifts to seek appropriate support and understanding during this challenging phase of life.

Weight Gain during Perimenopause

Weight gain is a common issue that many women experience during the perimenopausal years. It is unfortunate that during this stage, fat tends to accumulate in the abdominal area due to hormonal changes. This uneven distribution of weight can have negative consequences on overall health, as carrying excess pounds around the waistline is linked to insulin resistance, increasing the risk of heart disease and other health problems.

Moreover, as we age and go through perimenopause, the percentage of lean muscle mass in our body naturally decreases. This decrease in muscle mass leads to a reduction in our ability to burn calories efficiently. Therefore, it becomes crucial for women to maintain an active lifestyle and follow healthy diets to counteract these changes and manage weight effectively during perimenopause.
