Jaundice is a common symptom experienced by individuals with liver cancer. It is characterized by a yellowish hue that appears on the skin and the whites of the eyes. This discoloration occurs due to an increase in bilirubin, a yellow-orange substance, in the bloodstream. Normally, the liver filters out bilirubin, which is a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown, and directs it to the waste for elimination. However, when a malignant tumor affects the liver, its ability to effectively filter out bilirubin is compromised, resulting in the development of jaundice.
Understanding Abdominal Pain in Liver Cancer
In individuals diagnosed with liver cancer, experiencing abdominal pain is a common symptom. The pain typically occurs in the upper abdominal region and can range from mild to moderate discomfort. One possible cause of this pain is ascites, which refers to the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. When the abdomen becomes severely distended due to ascites, it puts pressure on the stomach lining, resulting in pain.
Another factor that can contribute to abdominal pain in liver cancer is the enlargement of the liver or spleen. As these organs grow in size, they compress the stomach, leading to pain and discomfort. It is worth noting that the pain may become more pronounced or develop further after meals.
