We’ve seen that people with Asperger’s syndrome often have trouble with non-verbal communication. This extends to aspects of verbal communication as well. In particular, it’s quite common for them to lack intonation in their tone. People often have a hard time understanding the mood of people with Asperger’s syndrome simply from the sound of their voices. This symptom also manifests as difficulty differentiating humor, sarcasm, and subtext within a conversation.
9. Appearance of Self-Interest
People with Asperger’s syndrome often fall into a hyper-focused state. These situations are typified by an unwillingness to engage in conversation with others or divert their attention from a single task. This often makes people feel that someone with Asperger’s syndrome is self-absorbed. However, in reality, it’s just a manifestation of the syndrome. People with Asperger’s syndrome simply have different ways of handling task-focused behavior.
