10 Symptoms of Liver Damage

4. Water Retention

We’ve seen some ways that liver damage can impact the circulatory system to cause swelling. This typically happens within the abdomen. But liver damage can cause larger-scale water retention and related swelling all over the body. The water retention can be so severe that people even have difficulty walking. Hands, fingers, and even eyelids can show signs of water retention. Swelling in lymphatic tissue can make this even worse through something known as lymphedema.

5. Skin Irritation and Itchiness

Everyone’s felt itchy before. But when the itchiness becomes especially severe it’s known as pruritus. This type of severe itchiness is especially common in conditions that impact circulation. And, as one might expect, this often comes into play with liver damage. The itchiness is further exacerbated by the buildup of bile products within the skin. This means that itchiness and jaundice usually escalate in severity alongside each other.
