Signs of Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the stage when the body starts its transition into menopause. It typically begins in a woman’s 40s but can occur earlier. During this phase, the ovaries gradually reduce estrogen production, leading to slight hormonal imbalances as the body adapts. Perimenopause can last up to ten years, although most women encounter symptoms for approximately four years. Once menopause commences, perimenopause concludes.

Understanding Irregular Periods During Perimenopause

One of the initial indications that a woman may be entering perimenopause is experiencing irregular periods. These irregularities can manifest as skipping a menstrual cycle or two, or the periods themselves may undergo changes in duration and flow. Some women may notice that their periods become lighter and shorter, while others may experience heavier and longer periods. It’s important to note that irregular periods can also be a sign of pregnancy, prompting many women to seek medical advice to confirm the cause of these changes. It is worth mentioning that menopause is officially diagnosed after a woman has missed 12 consecutive periods.

Migraines: Causes and Connections to Perimenopause

Migraines can be triggered by various factors, such as abnormal brain activity, certain odors, skipped meals, stress, physical exertion, and exposure to light. In addition to these common triggers, migraines can also be linked to the hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause. Specifically, the decrease in estrogen levels during this transitional phase is known to contribute to migraines, just as it does during the menstrual cycle. It is worth noting that menstrual-cycle-related migraines typically affect only women who are already prone to experiencing migraines. However, due to the fluctuation of estrogen levels during perimenopause, even women who have never previously experienced migraines may begin to have them during this stage of life.
