Prior to a HIDA scan, it is important for patients to follow certain guidelines to ensure accurate results. Doctors typically advise patients to fast for a minimum of four hours before the test. However, in some cases, individuals may be allowed to consume clear liquids during this fasting period. It is crucial for patients to inform the radiologist if they are pregnant and provide a detailed list of medications they are currently taking.
Moreover, individuals undergoing a HIDA scan should notify the medical staff if they have recently undergone a barium X-ray or have taken any medications containing bismuth. These factors can potentially interfere with the scan results, and it is essential for the medical team to be aware of them.
Prior to the scan, the medical staff will also request patients to remove any jewelry or metal accessories they may be wearing. This is necessary to ensure accurate imaging during the procedure.
Enhancing HIDA Scans with CCK
Improving the functionality of a HIDA scan, a radiologist may administer cholecystokinin (CCK) or a comparable medication. By introducing this hormone, the gallbladder is stimulated to empty and release bile, resulting in a more precise image of its performance. In certain cases, patients may also receive a dose of morphine to optimize visualization of the gallbladder.
