All About HIDA Scans

What to Expect During a HIDA Scan

Undergoing a HIDA scan is generally a painless procedure, although you may experience a slight sting when the doctor inserts the IV. Some individuals may feel a temporary and mild discomfort in their stomach if the doctor administers a medication to stimulate the gallbladder. It is important to note that the tracer used during the scan should not cause any pain. However, in rare cases, it can potentially lead to an allergic reaction.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Life can go on as usual for most individuals following the completion of the scan. Within 24 hours, the majority of the tracer will exit the body through natural means such as urine or stool. It is important for patients to maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands meticulously after eliminating the tracer. Rest assured, the minuscule amount of radiation contained in the tracer poses no harm.
