Leukorrhea: Normal and Abnormal Discharge

Common Causes and Risk Factors of Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge is a normal occurrence for women, typically caused by hormonal changes, especially estrogen. However, certain factors can lead to abnormal discharge, including infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. These infections are often caused by an imbalance in the natural flora of the vagina, although sexually transmitted infections can also be a contributing factor. Additionally, using products that contain irritating perfumes or dyes, such as soaps or douches, can disrupt the healthy balance of vaginal flora. Poor hygiene practices and engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners also increase the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.

Hormones

Estrogen levels play a significant role in influencing vaginal discharge. This impact is particularly noticeable during ovulation, when the egg is released from the ovary and travels into the uterus. It is common for women to experience increased discharge or observe minor color changes, such as a shift from white to clear during this time. Similarly, pregnant women and those in the post-menopausal stage may also notice these changes in their vaginal discharge.
