Diagnosing Rh Incompatibility in Infants and Fetuses

When it comes to diagnosing Rh incompatibility in newborns, there are several methods that medical professionals can employ. One common approach is to take a blood sample from the infant and analyze the levels of platelets and hemoglobin. This helps the doctor determine if the newborn is experiencing immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.

In some cases, a doctor may choose to conduct a direct combs test on the fetus to confirm the presence of Rh incompatibility. Alternatively, an amniocentesis procedure can be performed to assess the condition of the fetus and gather necessary information for diagnosis.


Antenatal treatment for Rh incompatibility

When it comes to treating Rh incompatibility during pregnancy, there are various methods available to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby. Antenatal treatment involves the use of ultrasound and Doppler by the doctor. These diagnostic tools are employed to assess the presence of anemia in the fetus. Additionally, the doctor will carefully examine the fetus for any signs of hydrops fetalis, a condition associated with Rh incompatibility. To further evaluate the situation, a quantitative analysis of the mother’s anti-RHD antibodies may also be conducted.

If any complications or concerns are identified, the doctor may choose to perform intrauterine blood transfusions. Alternatively, an early delivery of the baby might be recommended by the doctor. Generally, after 36 weeks of gestation, the doctor may discuss with the mother the option of delivering the baby for the well-being of both individuals involved.
