Talents and Skills of Individuals with Savant Syndrome
Individuals with savant syndrome possess remarkable talents and coordination skills that surpass their intellectual understanding and developmental functioning. Those on the autism spectrum who have this syndrome often acquire structured, rule-based, and nonverbal abilities. Their highly developed talents usually fall within one of five specific areas: art, music, mathematics, calendar calculation, or memory recall of facts, numbers, or events.
Males vs. Female Demographics
When it comes to savant syndrome, the number of males surpasses that of females by about six to one. Researchers have found that this discrepancy can be attributed to factors such as extra testosterone exposure and developmental challenges affecting the left side of the brain in male fetuses. The presence of excess testosterone in the male fetus can potentially hinder growth and impede neuronal function in the left hemisphere. Additionally, it has been observed that more males than females tend to develop conditions such as autism, dyslexia, speech delays, and stuttering. These conditions, too, have been associated with disturbances in the growth of the left hemisphere during the prenatal period.
