Cause: Ovarian Torsion
Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary becomes twisted around its supporting ligaments. Although the presence of ovarian cysts increases the likelihood of this condition, it can affect any woman. While relatively rare, ovarian torsion is considered a medical emergency due to its potential to restrict blood flow to the ovary. This restriction can result in serious complications such as infection, internal bleeding, and tissue death. Symptoms of ovarian torsion include sudden and intense lower abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Surgical intervention is the only way to untwist the affected ovary, and minimally invasive procedures are now available for this purpose.
Cause: Tumors
There are various causes of inflamed ovaries, and one of them is tumors. These tumors can be either benign or malignant. When a patient is diagnosed with a tumor, additional examinations such as blood tests or transvaginal ultrasounds may be conducted to gather more information. Ovarian cancer, a form of malignant tumor, affects approximately 1.2 million women across the globe. Unfortunately, ovarian cancer is often misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome due to the similarity in symptoms. The treatment for ovarian cancer typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
