Ten Types of Infectious Fungi

Pneumocystis: The Widespread Fungus with Opportunistic Infection Potential

Pneumocystis, a yeast-like fungus, is known for its extensive presence in the lungs of healthy individuals. Research suggests that as many as 20% of adults may carry Pneumocystis without experiencing any symptoms. However, this microorganism can become a source of opportunistic infection in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. Primarily affecting people with HIV/AIDS, as well as those with cancer or chronic lung disease, Pneumocystis pneumonia is a serious consequence of this fungal infection.

Blastomyces: A Fungal Infection Found in Specific Regions of the United States

Blastomyces is a fungal infection that is primarily found in certain regions of the United States, including areas around the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, as well as the Great Lakes. However, it is important to note that this fungus can thrive in any location with moist soil and an abundance of decomposing leaves and wood.

When individuals travel through these particular areas, they are at risk of inhaling the fungal spores. While most people do not experience any adverse effects, there is a possibility of developing an infection known as blastomycosis. The symptoms of this infection typically include coughing and fever, although they may worsen if left untreated.
