The Third Trimester

Weeks 31 to 34: The Final Stages of Fetal Development

As the countdown to birth begins, weeks 31 to 34 mark a crucial phase in fetal development. By this time, most major developmental milestones have been achieved, and the focus shifts towards weight gain and preparation for life outside the womb. Several significant changes occur during these weeks that contribute to the fetus’s readiness for delivery.

One notable change is the shedding of lanugo, the fine downy hair that covers the fetal skin. As the baby’s skin matures, this protective layer gradually falls off. Additionally, the pupils of the eyes start to respond to light stimuli, demonstrating the development of visual senses.

The bones of the fetus also undergo a vital transformation during this period. While the overall skeletal structure continues to grow stronger and more developed, the skull remains soft and flexible. This flexibility allows for easier passage through the birth canal during delivery.

By the end of weeks 31 to 34, the fetus reaches a length of approximately 12 inches from crown to rump and weighs an impressive four to five pounds. These weight and size measurements indicate the growing strength and maturation of the baby, setting the stage for a healthy and successful delivery.

Week 35 to Birth

During week 35, significant changes occur in the development of the baby. The skin becomes smoother and takes on a pinkish hue, while body fat starts accumulating in the limbs. At this stage, the fetus has grown so much that the mother may no longer feel the usual punches and kicks. This lack of movement is due to the limited space available for the baby to stretch out. However, the mother should still be able to notice rolls and wiggles. Additionally, the baby may now flip into the head-down position, getting ready for the upcoming birth.
