The Third Trimester

Breech Presentation

When a fetus does not naturally move into the delivery position, it is known as breech presentation. There are several types of breech presentations that can occur. The first type is called frank breech, where the baby’s buttocks are close to the birth canal while the feet are positioned near the head. Another type is footling breech, which happens when the feet are facing the birth canal instead of the head. Lastly, complete breech occurs when the buttocks are directed towards the birth canal, with the legs bent and the feet near the buttocks. Medical professionals diagnose breech presentations through a physical examination and the use of ultrasound technology.

Effective Techniques for Correcting Breech Presentation

When it comes to correcting breech presentation, there are several techniques that healthcare professionals employ. One commonly used method is known as external version. In this procedure, the mother is given medication to relax the uterus. The doctor then applies gentle pressure to the lower abdomen in an attempt to reposition the baby into a head-down position. While this technique is generally successful, it becomes increasingly challenging to perform as the due date approaches.

Alternatively, there are natural methods that may help encourage the baby to move into the desired position. For instance, placing headphones on the bottom of the abdomen and playing soothing music or familiar sounds can sometimes coax the baby to shift towards the source of the sound.
