Signs and Symptoms of Orthostatic Intolerance
Orthostatic intolerance (OI) can be identified through various signs and symptoms. Individuals with OI may experience visual difficulties, changes in blood pressure, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, and cognitive impairments such as difficulty focusing. One of the key indicators of OI is a change in blood pressure, which can both serve as a symptom and a cause of the condition. Visual problems associated with OI may include seeing stars and a darkening of vision. In more severe cases, individuals may even experience syncope, commonly referred to as fainting.
Understanding Orthostatic Intolerance and Its Impact on the Nervous Systems
Orthostatic intolerance can result from dysautonomia or dysfunctions in the central nervous system (CNS). These conditions can manifest as symptoms like syncope, lightheadedness, and neurocognitive issues, all of which are caused by disrupted blood flow to the brain. In some cases, these disruptions are linked to the brainstem.
