Understanding Metabolic Alkalosis
Metabolic alkalosis is a condition characterized by elevated levels of bicarbonate in the body. Bicarbonate serves as a buffer that helps maintain the body’s overall acidity levels. This crucial process is primarily regulated by the kidneys.
In cases of metabolic alkalosis, the levels of bicarbonate become consistently high. This condition typically occurs due to an excessive loss of acid in the body.
Compensation for Alkalosis
When it comes to maintaining the body’s pH balance, the human body is well-prepared. However, correcting alkalosis can be a challenge. In the case of metabolic alkalosis, compensation involves slowing down the respiratory system to retain more carbon dioxide (CO2). This approach, however, can lead to low oxygenation, creating additional complications. Consequently, the possibilities for compensation in alkalosis are somewhat restricted. On the other hand, in respiratory alkalosis, the kidneys respond by slightly lowering the bicarbonate levels, but the effects of this compensation are not immediately noticeable.
