What is POEMS Syndrome?

Skin Abnormalities Associated with POEMS Syndrome

POEMS syndrome can give rise to various skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation (darkening) and thickening of the skin. Additionally, individuals with this syndrome may experience excessive sweating and hair growth, especially on the face and legs. Although uncommon, the growth of blood vessels leading to deep red blotches on the skin can also occur as a result of this condition.

Possible Factors Contributing to POEMS Syndrome

The exact reasons why the immune system occasionally generates an excessive amount of plasma cells and M protein antibodies in individuals with POEMS syndrome remain uncertain. However, researchers have discovered a potential association between the syndrome and the overproduction of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF plays a crucial role in the formation and restoration of the endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels. Another possible relationship may exist between the syndrome and elevated levels of cytokines, which are cells that facilitate immune and inflammatory responses.
