What is POEMS Syndrome?

Endocrine Disorders in POEMS Syndrome

POEMS syndrome can cause disruptions in the endocrine system, leading to imbalances in hormone levels within the body. The most frequently observed endocrine disorder associated with this syndrome is diabetes. Additionally, individuals may experience hypothyroidism and adrenal gland insufficiency. Dysfunction of the ovaries in females and testes in males is also commonly seen in patients with POEMS syndrome.

Understanding Monoclonal Gammopathy

Monoclonal gammopathy is a condition that involves the abnormal growth of plasma cells in the bones. This excessive growth can result in the development of neoplasms, which are tumors containing plasma, as well as sclerotic bone lesions. Additionally, the overgrowth of plasma cells leads to the overproduction of the M protein. This particular protein is responsible for causing damage to cells and organs in individuals with POEMS syndrome.
