Uniqueness of Microbiome Linked to Better Health and Longevity
Studies have shown that older adults who possess a more diverse microbiome tend to enjoy better health and live longer lives. Research indicates that individuals with a unique microbiome have lower levels of LDL cholesterol, higher levels of vitamin D, and exhibit improved overall mobility. On the other hand, those with less diverse microbiomes are more likely to rely on medications and are twice as likely to experience mortality during the course of the study.
Diet
Experts believe that the negative effects on the gut and alterations in the microbiome may be a result of consuming diets that are high in sugar, salt, and processed fatty foods, as opposed to diets that are rich in high-fiber foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans. Additionally, various studies have demonstrated that adopting plant-based diets can contribute to a well-functioning gut, which, in turn, promotes healthy aging.
