Understanding the Worsening of Menstruation Symptoms with Age

The reasons behind the worsening of menstruation symptoms in women as they age are not fully understood by experts. It is commonly observed that women in their 40s tend to experience more pronounced premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms compared to their younger years. The Office on Women’s Health suggests that during perimenopause, hormonal changes occur as the body prepares for menopause. Consequently, women may experience a combination of PMS symptoms and early signs of menopause simultaneously.

Serotonin Levels During Menstruation

During menstruation, women not only experience changes in hormone levels but also in neurotransmitter levels, particularly serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that plays a crucial role in regulating mood and other physical symptoms. When serotonin levels drop, it can potentially explain why some women experience symptoms of depression during premenstrual syndrome (PMS). To counteract this decrease, doctors often prescribe hormonal birth control or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to women with severe PMS. These medications help to restore and maintain adequate levels of serotonin. It is worth noting that women who discontinue taking SSRIs may experience a worsening of PMS symptoms, highlighting the importance of serotonin in managing PMS.
